Our school
is located in Trešnjevka, Zagreb. It was founded on July 9, 1964
and it started working on October 1, 1964. Lessons were held
in three shifts with 1421 students in 45 classes and 58employees.
Classes had on average between 30 and 38 students. The school
building hadn't been completed yet when, on October 25 1964,
the biggest flood in its history struck the city. A big part
of our district was flooded. According to the newspaper reports,
35000 flats housing 180000 people were under water and 17 people
drowned. Many schools were destroyed in the flood, but the water
– by some miracle – didn't reach us. Both students and teachers
used barges to get to the school, which became a real little
island! Classes were then held only during daylight in three
shifts! The biggest number of students was recorded in the 1965/66
school year – 1605 students in 46 classes in three shifts. The
number of students fell because of new schools being built in
the surrounding districts. A considerable drop in the number
of students was recorded in the 1967/68 school year – from 1279
to 974. 'Voltino' primary school has always received high marks
during the evaluation of primary schools by the evaluation committees
and has frequently been rated among the top ten city schools.
In 1972 the school changes its name into 'Rade Končar' primary
school. It continues to work under that name until 1993 when
it again changes to the old one – 'Voltino' primary school. Today
the school has 690 students, 42 teachers, 14 other employees
and 3 counsellors – associates. The school is proud of its high
level of professionalism in character development and academic
education of its students, its rich cultural and public involvement,
cooperation with various institutions, advancement of sports
and physical activities and ecology as a way of life in the school
and beyond. Special attention is given to health care and addiction
prevention through workshops, seminars and lectures. Our students
regularly achieve high results in school, city and state competitions. We
successfully cooperate with parents of our students in parents'
meetings, lectures, individual consultations and workshops. The
school is involved in the European project of Eco-school. We
have started creative workshops, which the children look forward
to and enjoy very much. Their parents, grandparents, aunts and
uncles also take part in the workshops – sometimes we even invite
their pets! Working on common projects students learn through
fun things, which can sometimes seem boring and tedious in classic
teaching. Last year, the European year of languages, we got to
know other cultures through various projects, developing understanding
and tolerance. As you can see, we try to keep the school an island
of good cheer where children love to come, have fun and learn.
